(WWJ) Michigan's governor is headed to Washington D.C. to witness the swearing in of the new President of the United States.
Announced on Tuesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will attend the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris — nation's first female VP.
Recently, President-elect Biden nominated Gov. Whitmer to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
The governor's office says Whitmer has led Michigan through the worst public health crisis in over a century all while taking decisive action to protect and provide relief for millions of Michiganders. The state added that Whitmer "remains committed to working with the new Biden-Harris Administration to defeat COVID-19 once and for all and get the country and Michigan back to economic success."
"The country is ready for a leader who listens to medical experts to lead our country's COVID-19 response and works on behalf of hardworking Americans," said Gov. Whitmer, in a statement. "I am honored to attend the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and ready to begin working closely with each of them to fight this virus, save lives, and put the country back on track."
The inauguration, scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, at 11:30 a.m., is an invitation-only event.
Due to concerns following the deadly seige at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, security will be tight. The National Mall, which is typically packed with people during presidential inaugurations, is completely closed to the public.
