DETROIT (WWJ) -- Nine candidates have officially filed with the city of Detroit to appear on the ballot for this year's mayoral election.
Each candidate had to submit a minimum of 500 signatures to the city Department of Elections before the 4 p.m. filing deadline on Tuesday.
The candidates include:
- Mary Sheffield, city council president
- James Craig, former Detroit police chief
- Saunteel Jenkins, former city council president
- Fred Durhal III, city councilmember
- Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr., pastor
- Joel Haashiim, businessman
- Todd Perkins, lawyer
- Jonathan Barlow, entrepreneur
- Dean Evans, resident
The primary election will be held on August 5. The top two vote getters will advance to the general election on November 4.
Longtime Democratic Mayor Mike Duggan announced that he would be running for governor of Michigan in 2026 as an Independent, rather than seek a fourth term as mayor.
