DETROIT (WWJ) -- After fast-falling snow snarled travel Tuesday in Metro Detroit, forecasters say another round is on the way.
Although early snow on Tuesday made for slippery conditions — substantially slowing traffic in several spots — the snow accumulated only about an inch.
But AccuWeather Meteorologist Heather Zehr said drivers should continue to expect icy conditions throughout the day.
Then there's more snow coming.
"That second round of snow is goin to arrive later this (Tuesday) evening," Zehr said. "We're going to see an accumulation of 1 to 3 inches, before that mixes with rain into the overnight hours, as temperatures go from a low of 32 early on, to rising through the 30s overnight."
Zehr said that's going to mean drivers should expect a mix of ran and snow Wednesday morning, with a gusty wind.
For Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair and Shiawassee counties, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory with total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches expected between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 4 p.m. Wednesday. The combination of snow and wind gusts as high as 30 mph are expected to cause slippery road conditions, NWS.
In the Detroit area, Zehr said temps will then fall back through the 30s Wednesday afternoon, when more snow showers are expected — and it's going to turn slippery once again.
With all this in mind, police are urging drivers to use caution.
"Regardless of what we get, snow, rain, freezing rain or ice, there is something drivers can do to avoid crashes and that is slow down. Increase your following distance so you have time to react to other vehicles in front of you," said MSP Metro Detroit in a social media post.
Colder weather will return on Thursday, when the high in Detroit is expect to reach only to about 29 degrees, with clouds and sun giving way to a few flurries, AccuWeather says.
On Friday, Metro Detroit is expected to see more snow showers, and a high of 28 degrees.
Looking ahead into the weekend: It's going to be a cold one.
AccuWeather is calling for another chance for snow with intermittent flurries on Saturday, and a high of 24 degrees. On Sunday, the forecasted high in Metro Detroit is only 16 degrees.
