DETROIT (WWJ) -- "One of the craziest, silliest things I've seen in quite some time"

Those are the words of Detroit First Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald after three people were shot with a single bullet at an Eastern Market business at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

"We had an employee inside the restaurant, in the store. He claims he found the weapon. He was handling the weapon, he mishandled the weapon, and he shot himself in the hand," Fitzgerald said, briefing reporters on the incident. "That bullet went through the hand through the doorway and struck two other customers that were inside."

"We do have three people that have been struck by gunfire, one bullet. And one of the... the craziest, silliest things I've seen in quite some time," he added.

The employee that fired it suffered the worst injury, with the bullet going through the webbing of his hand, Fitzgerald said.

One customer was shot in the arm, and the other was just grazed, and was treated on the scene.

All of the injuries are non-life threatening, according to Fitzgerald.

Police are still working out where exactly the gun came from, as the investigation continues.

It's not clear yet what charged may be filed in the case.

"I mean, the bottom line is if you don't know how to handle a weapon, don't handle a weapon," Fitzgerald said. "Now we've got two other individuals that are just in the store trying to buy stuff, and now they're going to deal with a gunshot wound, no matter how minor it is."
