1 construction worker dead, another in critical condition after falling several stories while working on Detroit school

DETROIT (WWJ) -- One construction worker is dead, and another is critically injured after they both fell several stories at an elementary-middle school on Detroit's west side.

According to officials with the Detroit Fire Department, the two construction workers were doing roof repairs at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary-Middle School on Wednesday they fell at least three stories.

One of the two workers fell through a vent and into a basement, officials said.

The DFT official speaking with WWJ said one of the men died of his injuries, while the other was listed in critical condition.

The school went into a soft lockdown at 9 a.m., but it's not clear how long the two lying there before they were found.

The fire department said families of both men have been notified. Their names have not been released.

As for what caused this tragic accident, the investigation is ongoing.
