DETROIT (WWJ) -- A driver lost control while speeding through Detroit this morning, slamming into a tree and killing a passenger.

In a Saturday afternoon update, Assistant Detroit Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said that four young people were joyriding, driving recklessly through the city in a Dodge Durango.

Authorities say the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree on Woodhall St., near Cadieux and I-94. The impact caused the SUV to immediately catch fire.

According to Fitzgerald, officers responding to the scene did an amazing job and were able to pull three of the four occupants from the vehicle in time.

Sadly, the front seat passenger -- a man in his early twenties -- did not survive the fiery collision.

"You've got to stop," said Fitzgerald. "These kinds of things are killing the kids in our community."

The driver and two other passengers were taken to nearby St. John Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Fitzgerald also said that charges will be pursued once Detroit police complete their investigation into the crash.
