DETROIT (WWJ) - At least one person is dead after a fire broke out at a home on Detroit's west side early Thursday morning, Detroit fire officials confirmed.

WWJ"s Ryan Marshal reported live from the scene in the 4900 block of Florida Street in Detroit where the fire was extinguished roughly an hour after it started around 4:45 a.m. on Dec. 29.

A number of firefighters are on site working to determine what caused the blaze that officials said claimed the life of one person inside the home.

"We're hearing some unconfirmed reports that there may have been another person inside but DFD is still conducting initial investigation into the fire," Marshall reported.

Detroit Fire Chief James Harris said the home was engulfed when firefighters arrived after receiving reports of the fire and crews were working to knock it out when the building collapsed.

"We had to pull our team out. Make sure nobody got injured and put the fire out," Harris added.

Crews completely put out the flames just before 6 a.m. and confirmed the fatality, but Detroit police on scene told WXYZ that there could be at least one other person who was trapped inside.

Harris told Marshall that efforts now turn into investigating what actually happened to cause the fire.

"Chief Harris talked about sometimes people may have space heaters and sometimes those space heaters may overheat causing fires. That is not confirmed that there was a space heater involved," Marshall reported.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
