MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - One person is dead after their vehicle struck a wall and exploded outside the Macomb County Circuit Court building in Mount Clemens on Wednesday evening.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene outside the courthouse along Gratiot Avenue at the intersection of Cass Avenue where a vehicle slammed into a cement wall near the building and exploded on impact around 7:20 p.m.
When Macomb County Sheriff's deputies arrived, the vehicle was on fire. The driver and lone occupant in the vehicle was killed.
"You can see where it exploded, it's just black on the sidewalk on the east side of the Macomb County Circuit Court building," Campbell said. "There's a wall there and it's right on a curve on northbound Gratiot which curves to the right as it goes along the Clinton River -- and if you don't make that curve at the light at Cass, you go directly into this building and that's apparently what the driver did."
Police said they believe they have identified the driver and are working to notify relatives -- they have not released a name as of Thursday morning.
While witnesses state they saw the vehicle speeding along Gratiot Ave. immediately before the crash, police are still working on determining what exactly happened.
The incident is being investigated by crash experts.
The sheriff's office is still collecting information. Anyone with any information about the crash has been asked to call investigators at (586) 469-5151.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
