KALAMAZOO (WWJ) - One man is dead following a shooting just off the campus of Western Michigan University on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
As reported by WOOD TV, the fatal incident occurred just before noon at Westchester Woods Apartments on Little Drive off of W KL Avenue, east of Drake Road in Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said a male gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name, age and other information were not immediately released by police.
KDPS said this is their first homicide of 2023. Authorities did not release any details on what may be behind the shooting, but did mention as of 1:30 p.m. that no suspects were in custody.
Area resident Taya MacKenzie spoke to WOOD TV about the incident, stating she was alerted by the sirens of roughly 25 to 30 police cars. MacKenzie said shootings, while they have happened before, are not very common in the area.

Western Michigan University police advised students of the developing situation and advised all to stay clear of the area while investigators worked the scene.
The apartment complex is about one mile west of WMU's campus.
