LENOX TOWNSHIP (WWJ) – A prisoner is dead and another is injured after an inmate at the Macomb Correctional Facility stabbed them Tuesday morning.
While a motive in the attacks remains unclear, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz tells WWJ the prisoner responsible for the stabbings is being moved to a higher-custody facility.
Authorities have not released the names or ages of the suspect or victims.
As prisoners were heading back to their unit after breakfast Tuesday morning, Gautz said one of the prisoners began to stab another prisoner on the walkway.
The victim suffered stab wounds to the back, arm and face, according to Gautz.
Once officers were able to subdue the suspect prisoner and called an ambulance for the victim, staff went to search the suspect’s cell for contraband.
That’s when they found his cellmate suffering from severe injuries.
Gautz said prison staff attempted lifesaving measures, but they were unsuccessful.
The prisoner who was taken to the hospital has been treated and released back to the prison.
Officials are still working to determine what type of weapon the attacker used and how he got ahold of it.
Michigan State Police are investigating the attacks and a wellness team has been called in to give support to the staff and prisoners who witnessed the stabbing in the chow line, as well as those who knew the victims, Gautz said.
