ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- Royal Oak police want the public to know there is no threat or danger to the community after a deadly shooting in the city on Thursday.
Police Chief Mike Moore said officers responded to the Devon Park Apartments, just across the street from Royal Oak High School, after several 911 calls came in around noon about a shooting the parking lot.
According to police, there was a "verbal altercation" between two men before the gunfire ran out.
Moore said officers arrived to find one man had been shot. Police and EMS attempted life-saving measures, but the man died.
"Police officers quickly apprehended the suspect here on the scene, and identified key pieced of evidence," Moore said. "So, unfortunately one life was lost today, but the quick actions of the police officer was key in keeping the community safe."
Shayna Williams, who lives nearby, told WWJ Newsradio 950's Darrylin Horne a man ran to her asking for help.
"As I walked out of the leasing office, I just heard someone running up the street talking about, 'Help me, help me! He's trying to shoot me; he's trying to kill me!' And I'm like, 'Huh?'" Johnson said.
"But what he did was he ran up to me and he was like, 'I need help, you know, I need help. Someone's trying to shoot me!'"
When Johnson asked him who was trying to kill him, he said "the guy down there."
"I'm not gonna lie, I did get a little scared," she said. "I was a little scared, and I had to look at him, but he couldn't even look me in the eye because he's so scared. He was just trying to let me know that someone's after him."
Johnson said the man then ran across the street, as traffic came to a halt and drivers were blowing their horns.
Later, she said the cops rolled up and she learned that someone was dead.
"I'm just hoping that, you know, that's not the guy," Johnson told Horne. "And, if it is, I'm tremendously sorry."
At this time, police said it is believed that the two men did know each other and that this was a targeted attack.
The names and ages of those involved have not been released, as the investigation continues.
