12-year-old boy dies in Monroe County fire, 2 family members burned during rescue efforts

PETERSBURG, MICH. (WWJ) -- A young Monroe County boy was killed in an overnight fire, while his dad and brother sustained burns trying to save him.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a 12-year-old student from Summerfield Schools in Petersburg died early Monday morning in a fire that started in an unattached garage.


Summerfield Township firefighters responded to the blaze along West Walnut Street around 1:30 a.m.

Once inside they found the victim's body in the bathroom. He's been identified as Malaki Christian Giles.

His 37-year-old father and 13-year-old brother were treated and released from a Toledo-area hospital for burns suffered during their rescue efforts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
