
CANTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A 13-year-old girl is dead, and one person is in police custody after a shooting in Canton on Tuesday.
According to the Canton Police Department, shooting happened at the Ridgeline at Canton Apartments, in the area of Joy Rd. and Honeytree, east of Haggerty Rd.
At around 12:30 p.m., police quickly responded to a 911 call at the apartments to find the young girl who had been shot.
She was treated by the first officer on the scene, but life-saving efforts failed, and she was pronounced dead.
Police said there is a person of interest in custody, and there is no threat to the public at this time.
At this time, there is no information about whether this may have been an accidental shooting, or what led to the gunfire.
Canton Township Deputy Chief Joseph Bialy told Fox 2 he is concerned that there was an unsecured gun in the home that led to the tragic incident.
Fox 2 reported that the person of interest is the victim's 21-year-old brother, but police did not confirm that detail.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Luke Sloan said that's just of many questions that remain in the case, reporting, late Tuesday afternoon: "There's no word on the age of this person of interest in custody, or anymore arrests, or the relationship between the suspect and the victim."
In a brief update Wednesday, police said they have submitted their report to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review and determination as to charges in the case. Police said no further information is being released at his time.
