FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A 15-year-old boy was struck and killed while walking on the side of Telegraph Road in Monroe County, sheriff's officials said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it happened on Saturday, November 1, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Telegraph near Pardee Street in Frenchtown Township.

Sheriff's officials told WWJ the 15-year-old boy from Carleton was walking with a friend his age when he was struck by a white Dodge Journey.

They were walking southbound on the northbound shoulder of N. Telegraph Road, close to the white fog line.

Authorities identified the driver of the Dodge Journey as Mary Spurlock, 31, of Newport.

After the boy was struck, he came to rest on the east side ditch line of northbound Telegraph. The Dodge Journey came to "a controlled stop" in the Marathon gas station parking lot.

Authorities said Spurlock was unaware she had struck a pedestrian. However, after she realized the damage to her vehicle, she reported the crash to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The 15-year-old boy was taken to Corewell Trenton Hospital and pronounced dead.

Spurlock, who was not hurt, was released from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believe driver inattention is a factor in the crash, coupled with the fact the boy was wearing dark-clothing.

It's unclear why the two boys were walking along the side of the road at such a late hour.

The crash remains under investigation. If you have any information, please call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at (734) 240-7548 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SpeakUp.
