16-year-old boy hit by SUV, killed while riding his bike Friday morning in Armada Township: MSP

ARMADA (WWJ) -- A teenager is dead after authorities say he was hit by an SUV while riding his bike in northern Macomb County, Friday morning.

According to Michigan State Police, troopers were called out to a crash on Armada Ridge Rd., just north of 34 Mile Rd. near True Rd. in Armada Township just after 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 12.

A preliminary investigation found a Jeep Compass driven by a 66-year-old man from Memphis, Michigan was trying to pass another vehicle, when he hit the 16-year-old bicyclist.

MSP said the boy was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he died of this injuries.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

MSP said the investigation is ongoing.

In a letter to parents, Armada school superintendent Michael Musary confirmed that the victim was a sophomore in the district.

He said the schools have implemented a crisis plan and made counselors available for any student who needs support, adding: "As the entire school community continues to cope with the loss, we will make every effort to help you and your child as you need."
