HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) -- A 16-year-old boy from Highland Park has been charged with first-degree, premeditated murder in the shooting death last month of another teen.
Highland Park Police were called to a dollar store on Woodward Avenue, near Manchester St., at around 3:45 p.m. on Nov. 25 for a reported shooting.
Officers found the victim, a 13-year-old Detroit boy, in the parking lot with a gunshot to the back. He was taken to a local hospital were he died.
Authorities said an investigation found the young suspect allegedly fired a handgun multiple times, hitting the victim, then fled.
The teen was arrested on Dec. 7, following an investigation by Highland Park police with help from Michigan State Police.
He isn't being charged as an adult, but is adult designated. This means the judge would have the option of sentencing him as a juvenile, adult or blending the sentence if he's convicted.
The defendant is scheduled to appear in court for preliminary hearing on Saturday.
Authorities have not talked about a possible motive, or what led up to the gunfire. No names have been released.
