(WWJ) A Wayne State University student who should have had her life ahead of her was gunned down hours after Christmas ended, leaving her loved ones heartbroken and yearning for answers.
Police said Casey Willis, 18, was killed in a shooting around 2 a.m. Saturday on Cardoni, in the area of Nevada and I-75.
Casey and an 18-year-old man were sitting in a Honda Civic when two masked suspects approached and fired multiple shots, killing Casey at the scene; police said.
The man was not injured.
Surveillance video from a neighbor's home shows a man in a white ski mask with what appears to be a semi-automatic.
The suspects remain on the run, possibly driving a Chevy Impala.
Casey balanced college life and working two jobs. She served as a board member for Alternatives for Girls, a charity that helps homeless and at-risk girls gain access to shelter and resources.
CEO of Alternatives For Girls, Amy Good, wrote of Casey: "Casey was beloved and respected…(she) lives on through her example, her words and her love for others."
A GoFund Me page has been set up to help Casey's single mother and her five siblings.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Detroit Police Department's Homicide Section at (313) 596-2260.
