BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A 19-year-old Detroit man died in a crash on I-96 along the Oakland County/Livingston County border, police said.

Michigan State Police (MSP) said the crash happened on westbound I-96 at Kensington on Wednesday, July 23, around 9:30 a.m.

Witnesses told MSP the 19-year-old was driving his 2023 Chevy Malibu at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Their preliminary investigation revealed he was traveling in the right lane, swerved into the middle lane and struck another vehicle.

The Chevy Malibu overturned and hit a construction traffic trailer, according to MSP.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the other drivers suffered minor injuries.

MSP said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The freeway was closed for several hours for the investigation. Troopers were assisted by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, Oakland County Sheriff's Department, and multiple Fire/EMS agencies.
