St. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) -- A young man has died after being shot on a freeway in Macomb County over the weekend, according to police.

A stretch of eastbound I-94 was closed for over six hours on Saturday, after what police described as a shootout on the freeway near 10 Mile Rd. in St. Clair Shores.

Michigan State Police investigators said two people allegedly shot at each other while driving on the freeway. One of the passengers threw a gun up the embankment, where it was recovered by police.

Two people were taken to the hospital.

On Tuesday, MSP confirmed that a 19-year-old Detroit man involved in the shooting has died at the hospital.

Family and friends have identified the victim as Alvin Johnson, also known as "Lil Mark."

A GoFundMe has been started by his mother, to help with funeral expenses. The mom wrote on the fundraising website that her son was an amazing young man — a student athlete and a scholar, who loved football and his family.

"Our family is grateful for all of the support during this very tragic time, and we sincerely appreciate all of the calls, texts, visits, and prayers. Many have reached out and asked how they can help during this very difficult time. Collectively, we decided to acknowledge the outpouring of love and allow those near and far that loved Alvin, to help ensure that he is properly laid to rest," she wrote.

Michigan State Police say they have no additional updates, as the investigation is still active. Detectives are working to find a motive, police said, and the relationship between the alleged shooters is still unclear.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 855-MICH-TIP or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (800-773-2587).
