19-year-old shot multiple times by police after allegedly 'charging' at officers with edged weapon in West Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) - Grand Rapids police officers opened fired on a 19-year-old suspect wielding an edged weapon, striking him several times, while responding to a Saturday morning call, officials said.
Investigators with the Michigan State Police are now handling the case after the incident escalated around 8:30 a.m. on December 16 in the 200 block of Union Ave NE, between Lyon and Crescent Streets, in Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids police said officers were called out to the location on a "trouble with a person" call. When they arrived at the scene, they found a 19-year-old suspect acting erratically before he produced an "edged weapon" and charged at officers.
"Two officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect multiple times," the department said in a press release. "Medical aid was immediately rendered by GRPD and East Grand Rapids Public Safety officers arriving on scene."
The 19-year-old was rushed to a local hospital where he was last reported by hospital staff to be undergoing surgery. The extent of his injuries is unclear.
MSP responded to take over the investigation, as standard procedure calls for. Per procedure, the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.
The investigation remains on going. No other information was released by police.
