DETROIT (WWJ) -- A big fire broke out, Wednesday afternoon, at a high-rise on the Wayne State University campus in Detroit.
Smoke could be seen for miles billowing from the 11th floor of the Maccabees building, on Woodward Ave.
The building has been evacuated, and there are no reports of anyone hurt.
Officials say the fire is out (as of 1:45 p.m.), but authorities are asking everyone to avoid the area, as it remains an active scene.
A WSU spokesman Jon Lockwood said the fire was confined to 11th floor.
Lockwood said the fire department is still hosing the building down, and it's too soon to tell how badly it has been damaged.
The floor houses the grad school dean office and department of African American studies. No classes are held there.
The Maccabees Building (sometimes called Wayne Tower) is an art-deco style building designed by Albert Kahn, at 5057 Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
There is no information about how the fire started.
