SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Between two and just under four inches of snow fell across Metro Detroit Friday night, during a Winter Weather Advisory that was issued for all of Southeast Michigan--for what Accuweather called a "major winter storm."
The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), covered the entire WWJ Newsradio 950 listening area — including Macomb, Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee, Monroe, Lapeer, Lenawee, St. Clair, Livingston, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac and Shiawassee counties.
According to the NWS, Romulus recorded the highest snowfall at 3.7 inches during an 18 hour period. Lake Orion (2.7), Sterling Heights (2.7), and Flint (2.9) all saw close to three. An even two inches fell on Troy, Farmington Hills, and Beverly Hills.
The advisory was in effect from 1 p.m. Friday (Jan. 10), through 1 a.m. Saturday.
The snowfall began Friday afternoon in Metro Detroit and continued into the evening.
Peak snowfall was from about 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and impacted the PM commute. Michigan State Police reported no major crashes as a result.
"It's going to make things very slippery pretty quickly this afternoon, when that snow gets underway around lunch time," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg, speaking live on WWJ, ahead of the snowstorm.
"If you're going to the Auto Show, or going to the preview, you'd better prepare for some extra travel time because the roads are going to become snow-covered and slippery fairly quickly...and you will need extra travel time to get there, or anywhere, this afternoon and into tonight."
Drivers are always urged to slow down and use caution while traveling during snow.
Looking ahead, Lundberg said the weekend looks pretty good weather-wise, with highs around freezing, cloudy skies and maybe a little sunshine on Saturday.
Another front will come through on Monday, possibly bringing a little snow or flurries, but it won't be much, Lundberg said.
