(WWJ) - Beach-goers in Metro Detroit beware: some beaches may have to sit out the Fourth of July festivities after officials say they may have unsafe swimming conditions.
Authorities with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy's Beach said high bacteria levels may force the closures of St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach in Macomb County and Taylor's Beach at Cool Lake in Livingston County.
Taylor's Beach has been under an advisory since June 29 due to contamination from wildlife.
Officials said St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach was found to have high levels of bacteria from an unknown source on July 1. Th beach was closed on June 30 and has had multiple other closures over the past two months.
On Saturday, the two beaches were still under contamination advisories.
The unsafe bacteria levels were found after samples pulled from the water were processed through the EGLE's Beach Guard system.
Tests are conducted several times throughout the day and status can change quickly as new results are analyzed.
