LIVINGSTON COUNTY (WWJ) - A stretch of US-23 near Brighton was closed for hours overnight after a semi truck crossed the median and crashed into oncoming traffic, killing at two people.

According to Green Oak Township Police, the multi-vehicle crash happened at around 9:30 p.m. Monday, along southbound US-23 near mile marker 57, south of Lee Rd.

A preliminary investigation found that a semi heading north on US-23 crossed into southbound traffic, colliding with another semi head-on.

This led to a chain-reaction, with crashes involving the original truck, a pickup truck that caught fire and an SUV, police said.

The pickup driver and the driver of the southbound semi were both ejected from their vehicles and died at the scene.

The driver of the semi that crossed the median was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Both northbound and southbound US-23, as well as Whitmore Lake Road were closed for several hours during the investigation, finally reopening the stretch around 3:30 p.m.

The names and ages of the people who died were not immediately released.
