MONROE (WWJ) - A pair of Downriver deputies are recovering from injuries they sustained in a late-night scuffle with a suspect following a chase with a stolen vehicle on Thursday evening, authorities said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said deputies were able to recover the stolen vehicle and make two arrests in the case, but not after one suspect put up a fight.

According to authorities, the trouble began just after 11 p.m. on April 6 when deputies tried to pull over a blue 2007 Pontiac SUV that was reported stolen out of Detroit.

The deputies initiated the traffic stop near the intersection of Stewart and N. Telegraphs Roads, but the driver kept going. Authorities continued to pursue the SUV until it finally stopped on N. Macomb Street, near Oakwood in Monroe.

"Once the vehicle stopped, the female driver was immediately taken into police custody without incident," the sheriff's office said. The male passenger, however, got out of the vehicle and refused to comply with orders from the deputies.

"The male subject became aggressive and uncooperative. He then began to physically assault two deputies during his arrest," the sheriff's office added.

The deputies involved both sustained minor injuries in the altercation. The man was eventually taken into custody while the injured deputies were treated and released at a local hospital.

The sheriff's office stated that the female driver, identified as a 38-year-old Monroe resident, was lodged at the Monroe County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle and several traffic violations.

The combative male passenger, identified as a 30-year-old from Monroe, was arrested on two counts of assault on a police officer and an outstanding arrest warrant. He was also taken to the Monroe County Jail.

The names of the two arrested were not released by police pending formal arraignments.

The sheriff's office added that there was a third passenger, an 18-year-old male, riding in the rear seat. He was cooperative during the investigation and released at the scene after it was determined he was not involved in the vehicle theft.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and anyone with information is encouraged to step forward. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 734-240-7700.
