BEDFORD TWP. (WWJ) – Authorities believe alcohol and speeding were factors in a Monroe County crash Saturday night that left two people, including an 81-year-old man, in critical condition.

The crash happened at the intersection of Smith and Cloverlane Roads in Bedford Township around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says 81-year-old James T. Martin of Ottawa Lake, Mich., was driving his 2018 Chevy Silverado Saturday night when he came to a stop at a four-way stop at Smith and Cloverlane.

As Martin proceeded through the intersection, his truck was t-boned by a 2009 Honda Accord driven by 32-year-old Joshua DuPree, also of Ottawa Lake, officials said.

DuPree was speeding, headed eastbound on Smith, according to witnesses, and ignored the four-way stop. The collision caused both vehicles to spin around, the sheriff's office said.

Neither driver was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash, but airbags deployed in both vehicles, officials said.

Martin and DuPree were both taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital and were listed in critical condition, as of Sunday afternoon.

The sheriff's office said alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.

Members of the Bedford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Monroe County Road Commission assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
