PONTIAC (WWJ) — A suspect is in custody and two men are hospitalized after a shootout Friday night at a Pontiac business officials say was used as an "after-hours meeting place."
Police were called to a strip mall on Huron Street shortly before 11 p.m. after getting calls reporting that someone had been shot.
When Oakland County Sheriff's deputies showed up they found numerous bullet holes in the building's front façade. When deputies went inside they found a 23-year-old Pontiac man holding an AR-style rifle.
He dropped the weapon when deputies ordered him to. The man had a minor gunshot wound to the back.
While deputies were clearing the building they found another 23-year-old Pontiac man in a back room who had a more severe wound to his back. EMS and firefighters arrived and rendered aid to both victims, who were taken to the hospital.
One victim is listed in stable condition, while the other was said to still be in critical condition late Sunday afternoon.
Investigators found a large number of shell casings in the street, as well as more casings inside and another loaded AR-style magazine, according to the sheriff's office.
Inside, deputies also found a large amount of marijuana, while narcotic paraphernalia was "strewn about the building in plain view," and the building "appeared to have been used as an after-hours meeting place."
Several vehicles in the parking lot were hit by gunfire.
Investigators were able to identify and find the suspect vehicle and driver, who was taken into custody without incident. Deputies located a scale, baggies, and marijuana in his vehicle. Charges are pending against the 28-year-old Pontiac man
A possible motive in the shooting was not disclosed.
