WATERTOWN TWP. (WWJ) — Two people have died and more than a dozen others were injured after a suspected drunk driver drove into a group of pedestrians in Clinton County Saturday evening.
Authorities were called to the scene of the crash, in the area of South Waucousta Road near Corrison Road in Watertown Township — just northwest of Lansing — around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office.
A 35-year-old woman from Perrinton — about 40 miles north of Lansing — allegedly drove into the large group of pedestrians walking on the shoulder of South Waucousta, according to the sheriff's office.
The woman's vehicle then fled from the scene. She was stopped by deputies several miles away and taken into custody. She was being held at the Clinton County Jail.
Two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene. Their ages and hometowns were not disclosed.
The sheriff's office says 13 other people — ranging in age from toddlers to senior citizens — were taken to the hospital. Their injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening, officials said.
Multiple police and fire departments responded to the scene.
Authorities say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The suspected drunk driver's name has not been disclosed and no charging information has been released, as the crash remains under investigation.
