(WWJ) Two men, a 30-year old from Detroit and a 20-year old from Madison Heights, died after exchanging gunfire inside an apartment on Christmas night, according to Southfield Police.
Police were called to the Riverstone Apartments in the 25000 block of Shiawassee Road Thursday night just after 9:30 regarding a shooting. Police say three people were shot.
A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from a domestic assault that occurred earlier in the day, which was not reported to police, Southfield Police said in a statement issued Friday morning.
Witnesses told police the boyfriend assaulted his girlfriend and left the apartment. The girlfriend invited a friend over to the apartment, and she brought a male friend. When the boyfriend returned to the apartment, he forced his way in, grabbed a gun and started shooting. The other man grabbed his gun and the two men exchanged gunfire inside the apartment. Both men were shot during the gunfire exchange.
The friend and her male acquaintance left the apartment and rushed to a nearby hospital. The man died at the hospital. The girlfriend and boyfriend that remained on scene were transported to nearby hospitals by Southfield Fire and Rescue. The woman was shot in the hand and is expected to make a full recovery.
A boy, 3, was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but wasn't hurt. He was turned over to a family member.
Southfield police say the investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Southfield Police Department at (248) 796-5500 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800SPEAK-UP.
