BARAGA COUNTY (WWJ) - Two men in the Upper Peninsula had to be taken to the hospital at the beginning of the month after they were injured falling through ice on Lake Superior, officials said.

Michigan State Police urged Michiganders to check and double-check ice conditions before wandering out on frozen surfaces after the incident was reported on the Keweenaw Bay in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

MSP said troopers from the Calumet Post were called out to Lake Superior in Baraga County on Feb, 8 around 1;30 p.m. after two men were seen in the water roughly 250 to 300 yards from shore.

Troopers launched rescue efforts and were able to retrieve the pair.

The two men were taken by ambulance to the Baraga County Memorial Hospital and were treated for their injuries.

MSP said those venturing out on ice or anglers trying to take advantage of cooler weather need to be especially careful and make sure ice is safe before going onto it.
