DETROIT (WWJ) – Two Michigan State Police troopers are recovering after being injured in separate incidents in Metro Detroit over the weekend.
Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday a trooper stopped a Dodge Ram for speeding and reckless driving on 7 Mile Road near the Southfield Freeway.
While the driver — a 33-year-old Detroit man — was "hesitant to stop," MSP officials say he eventually pulled over. After the trooper opened the driver's door and started to place handcuffs on the suspect, he "began to resist and fight with the trooper."
The suspect was eventually tased and arrested, but not before punching the trooper in the mouth. MSP Officials say the trooper was taken to the hospital to get stitches in his lip.
Charges are pending against the suspect, whose name has not been released.
A little less than 10 hours later another trooper on patrol near 8 Mile and Wyoming Avenue on the Detroit-Royal Oak Twp. border tried to stop a driver for running a red light, only for the woman to refuse and continue driving at a slow speed.
MSP officials say the trooper called for backup as the suspect turned onto a side street before eventually pulling to the driveway of a home on Strathmoor near Pembroke.
As the trooper approached the suspect to take her into custody, officials say the female suspect began to resist.
The female trooper was able to use a takedown to get the suspect to the ground, but in the process fractured her own leg. She was eventually taken to the hospital.
The suspect then ran into the house and barricaded herself in the home. Officials said it was "quickly realized that the occupants of the house were not going to be cooperative with troopers."
After a standoff and negotiations with the suspect's husband, she came out and was taken into custody. A search warrant for the house was conducted and she was held at the Oakland County Jail, pending prosecutor review.
"Twice today suspects being stopped for traffic decided to fight and injure troopers that were out protecting their community." MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on social media. "I am proud of the way they were able to get these suspects off the street without any members of the public being hurt."
