STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A road rage incident spiraled out of control in Sterling Heights on Tuesday evening and ended with a woman and her adult daughter being shot during the confrontation in a restaurant parking lot, police said.
Lt. Mario Bastianelli of the Sterling Heights Police Department said via WDIV that two vehicles began engaging in an incident of road rage around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27 while on Schoenherr Road near Hall Road.
According to Bastianelli, the incident involved a red Jeep occupied by a mother and her adult daughter while a woman with a concealed weapons permit (CPL) was behind the wheel of a white Dodge Durango.
The two vehicles allegedly went back and forth aggressively while on the road before the Durango pulled into the parking lot of a Carrabba's Italian Grill in a shopping area on Hall near Schoenherr.
All three women got out of their vehicles and began arguing before the CPL holder produced a weapon and shot the other woman and her daughter, police said.
The mother sustained non-life-threatening injuries while the daughter is listed in critical condition.
The suspect remained at the scene until police arrived and is cooperating, Bastianelli said. After she was interviewed by investigators, she was released from custody.
It is currently unknown if any charges will be brought against the driver who fired the gun, but an investigation into the incident remains on going.
As reported by WDIV, Bastianelli warned drivers against engaging in road rage incidents where you may be putting your life at risk.
“Any driving offense where you’re going to get into an argument with somebody, you don’t know what that person has been going through, what’s going on, you don’t know if they’re armed,” Bastianelli said. “And nothing is worth risking your life over or risking going to jail over.”
