VAN BUREN TWP. (WWJ) — A 23-year-old Wayne County man is dead after presumably drowning on Belleville Lake on Memorial Day.

Authorities were called to the lake near Firecracker Island shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after family members called 911 to report the man had gone missing.

The man disappeared underwater while he was wading in the water near the island, where he and three other family members had docked their boat.

Van Buren Public Safety officials say one family member made an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the man as he was going underwater.

The Van Buren Public Safety Dive Team was immediately dispatched to the scene to conduct a search for the missing man, who was ultimately found dead in about 11 feet of water, officials said.

The man's name was not immediately released.

"The Van Buren Police and Fire Departments would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to the victim's family and loved ones during this difficult time," officials said in a statement on Facebook.

No other details surrounding the incident have been released.
