(WWJ) More than two-dozen Macomb County residents were arrested during a four-day sweep targeting parents who haven't paid ordered child support.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies knocked on doors across Macomb County from Sept. 21–24, attempting to make contact with more than 140 people who owed back child support.
Out of the group, 26 were arrested.
The sheriff's office said those 26 people — all together — owed almost $677,000 dollars in unpaid child support, and had 45 outstanding bench warrants.
Commander Jason Abro told WWJ's Darrylin Horne that the sweep wasn't announced ahead of time for a reason.
He said parents who owe child support should take action before this happens to them.
"I have never see the Friend of the Court not want to work with somebody," Abro said. "My message is contact the Friend of the Court. Go up there, meet them in person. You know, nobody wants to see anybody arrested. We just want to make sure that these children, these families, that they are taken care of."
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the department does these sweeps routinely, in collaboration with the Friend of the Court.
“The enforcement of child support obligations remains a serious issue in Macomb County,” Wickersham said, in a statement. “These enforcement efforts are about accountability and, most importantly, making sure children receive the financial support they are entitled to. When court-ordered support is not paid, it can place an unnecessary burden on families and directly impact a child’s basic needs. Our goal is to help ensure children have the resources and support they need to grow, thrive and succeed.”
No names or details about those in custody were immediately released.
