FLINT (WWJ) -- In a strange incident, a Flint mother alerted police to an alleged car thief and kidnapper Friday, then chased down the man who had driven off with her two-year-old child in the back seat -- only to discover that the "crook" was a repossession agent, charged with collecting her vehicle.
According to Flint Police, officers responded to a call for a stolen vehicle and kidnapping Friday afternoon.
A woman reported stepping out of her car for a moment in the 2100 block of S. Dort, then observing someone drive away in the vehicle while her young child was still inside.
The mother chased after her stolen car and two-year-old in a friend's vehicle, updating 911 dispatchers of their location along the way.
Flint cops caught up to the suspect on northbound I-475, just after Carpenter Rd.
Conducting a traffic stop, law enforcement discovered that the driver was a repossession agent, tasked with taking back the woman's vehicle. This person had not checked for other occupants before driving away and said they did not realize there was a child in the backseat.
The two-year-old was unharmed and is safely back home.
"We thank the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, Genesee Township Police and Mt. Morris Township Police for assisting with this incident," Flint Police said in a Facebook post about the pursuit. "Great job by all!"
Whether or not there was any further investigation into the matter is unclear.
