MT. CLEMENS (WWJ) – Police have recovered three classic cars that were stolen from a dealer in Mt. Clemens last month.
Investigators have identified a Lincoln Park man as the suspect, though no charges have been filed yet.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office got a call back in February that someone had broken into Michaels’ Auto Sales in Mt. Clemens and stole three classic cars. Officials say a blue 1969 Chevy Camaro, a maroon 1986 Buick Regal and a black 1986 Buick Grand National were taken.
The case was turned over to the Macomb Auto Theft Squad (MATS).
The 1969 Camaro was found, unoccupied, a short distance from Michael’s Auto Sales, located on Gratiot near Huron Avenue. The vehicle was recovered and examined by MCSO.
Investigators got a lead on the stolen Grand National during a conversation at the Autorama car show in Detroit the last weekend of February. Officials say near a display of several Grand Nationals a man attending the show said he had one for sale.
The man listed the price at $10,000, but said he didn’t have the title. This vehicle matched the description of the stolen Grand National. MATS investigators were able to develop a male suspect from this information.
An investigator later contacted the suspect and learned that the vehicle in question was in fact stolen from Michael’s Auto Sales. It was also learned that the suspect resided in Lincoln Park.
When investigators went to Lincoln Park, they found what is believed to be the stolen Grand National in the backyard of a home on Montie Street.
The suspect was linked to this residence through family members, officials said. A search warrant was obtained to enter the property of this address and authorities determined the Grand National on the property was in fact the stolen vehicle from Michael’s Auto Sales. It has been recovered and examined.
Through further investigation, the Buick Regal was found unoccupied in a church parking lot in Lincoln Park. This vehicle was also recovered and examined.
MATS investigators are currently working to obtain a warrant for the suspect.
