LINCOLN PARK (WWJ) - Witnesses to a crash that killed three young people Downriver say speed is to blame after the vehicle slammed into a tree and flipped over Thursday evening.
According police, two teenagers and a little girl were among those who died after the car they were in crashed along Cicotte near Porter, Thursday night.
In an update Friday afternoon, police said an 8-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, all died in the crash.
Police said at least one of the victims was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over several times and hit a tree.
The 14-yea- old girl, who was driving the car, as well as a 13-year-old girl are hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.
Witnesses told WWJ's Charlie Langton that speeding likely caused the crash, as they saw the car going down the road at about 70 mph, where the posted speed limit is 25 mph.
Neighbors said speeding, especially with young drivers, is common in that area.
"I mean, respect the signs," one neighbor told Langton. "Kids are around, adults, you know, people. We're human beings, they've got to respect that."
Meanwhile, the city manager says they have studied the issue and determined that speeding in the area was not as prevalent as reported
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the police department and members of the Downriver Mutual Aid Accident Accident Investigation Team.
