Officer shoots, kills armed suspect who shot witness trying to help after car crash on Westland/Garden City border

WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - Authorities provided updates on a "police investigation" after police say two people -- a gunman and a witness -- were shot after crashing in Garden City on Tuesday morning.

Michigan State Police provided the latest update just after noon on December 26th, stating a suspect had been fatally shot by police, a witness was allegedly shot by the suspect and a driver was injured in an incident that all stemmed from a car crash around 7:30 a.m.

According to MSP, a 37-year old male driver from Hamtramck was involved in a crash on Ford Road near Venoy, near the border with Westland. When he exited his vehicle, troopers say he shot a witness who was rushing to the scene to help.

The gunman also fired at several other vehicles in the area, MSP added.

Garden City Police officers responded to the area on reports of shots fired and were the first to reach the scene. Upon their arrival, they confronted the suspect with one officer open firing on the gunman, fatally striking him.

The witness who was shot by the suspect was rushed to a local hospital and is said to be in stable condition, MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw told WWJ's Tony Ortiz.

Another person who sustained injuries from the initial crash is also hospitalized in stable condition.

An alert sent to Garden City residents just before 8:30 a.m. asked drivers to avoid the intersection of Ford and Venoy for an ongoing police investigation, saying "the intersection is closed in all directions and will require a detour of traffic for the next few hours."

Video of the investigation posted to social media showed a Jeep and car with severe front end damage along with a red Chevy vehicle out front of the Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Garden City dealership at 32850 Ford Road.

At the time, unconfirmed reports stated a road rage incident escalated between drivers, leading to a crash near the intersection and gunfire. Three people were allegedly shot during the incident, with one victim reportedly struck the head.

Police later on clarified that only two people were shot -- the witness who was allegedly shot by the suspect and the suspect who was shot and killed by police -- while one victim was hurt in the crash.

Troopers are currently at the scene along with Garden City police officers. State police say they are trying to determine if road rage played some part in the case.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800)-SPEAK UP or Michigan State Police at (855) MICH-TIP.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
