PONTIAC (WWJ) The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy.

Sheriff's officials said the shooting occurred on Tuesday, September 15, around 5 p.m. inside an apartment on Maynard Court, in the area of University Drive and Woodward Ave. in Pontiac.

According to Sheriff Mike Bouchard, the child’s mother and grandmother were both inside the home at the time, along with four other children.

He said investigators believe one of the kids found and picked up the gun, but they're still working to determine who pulled the trigger.

"(Investigators) will be speaking to anybody who was in the home to see what they say, how it played out, look at timelines..." he said. "They'll be taking it by the numbers to make sure it's done right."

Investigators have uncovered the gun.

Bouchard said it belonged to the boy's father who was not home at the time of the shooting.

"If you're an adult, and you own a weapon and you have an 8-month-old, a 3-year-old, a 7-year-old and 8-year-old, my God, have some common sense," he said.

Bouchard added the Oakland County Sheriff's Office offers gunlocks for free.

"Someone will be held accountable for this completely unnecessary tragedy," Bouchard said. "We have great rights in this country. But we also have great responsibility."

The boy's name was not immediately released.
