TROY (WWJ) -- A 36-year-old man is dead after police say he jumped out of his parents' car and was hit while on foot on northbound I-75.

Late Wednesday night, Troy Police when a couple from out-of-state went to the police station to report that their son was "experiencing emotional distress." While they were in the area of the Civic Center complex, they said their son got out of the car and ran away.

A short time later, at around 11:20 p.m., a 911 caller reported seeing a pedestrian walking along the shoulder of northbound I-75 near Big Beaver Rd.

While police were looking for the pedestrian, the driver of a black Audi sedan called 911 to say he'd hit an unknown object in the middle lane of I-75 near Wattles Rd.

Officers responded to that scene and found a pedestrian who'd been hit by the Audi and then by several other vehicles. Police confirmed that the victim was the same man who'd been reported missing by his parents.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the Audi were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said that drugs or alcohol were not a factor on the part of the Audi driver.

Northbound I-75 was closed for several hours at the scene of the crash, with police on the scene.

The investigation by the Troy Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is ongoing.

Anyone with additional is asked to call the Troy PD at 248-524-3477.
