4 dead, 2 in critical condition in Washtenaw County home explosion

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Officials confirmed four people are dead and two others were seriously injured after an explosion rocked a Washtenaw County home on Saturday afternoon.

The Huron Valley Ambulance Public Information Officer Mark Breckenridge told WWJ's Taylor Dietz that the scene remains "very active" at the home located on Winters Lane, near Cole and 6 Mile, just outside of Whitmore Lake in Northfield Township.

The PIO said 911 calls reporting the explosion came pouring in around 3:35 p.m. Breckenridge confirmed four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

He originally said three other people in critical condition were rushed to Michigan Medicine, but later confirmed only two others were injured.

Breckenridge went on to say crews from six fire departments and two ambulances from Livingston County and some from Huron Valley were at the scene.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time.

Breckenridge told Dietz that firefighters and other first responders are in "rescue mode right now" and an investigation into the cause hasn't begun.

Other structures and buildings near the home might have been impacted in the blast, but Breckenridge said he couldn't confirm with certainly at this time.

Additional details are expected to be released as they become available. No other information was provided.
