4 mile stretch of I-94 on Detroit's west side remains closed due to flooding

(WWJ) -- Those driving on Detroit's westside and heading towards Dearborn should continue to find an alternative route this morning.

The 4-mile stretch of I-94 from I-96 to Michigan Avenue remains closed.

The freeway is flooded with standing water from torrential storms that hit metro Detroit over the weekend.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has said that pumping stations in the area still don't have power. According to DTE Energy, about 3,000 homes and businesses in Dearborn also remain without electricity.

More than 6 inches of rain fell over the course of just few hours Friday and Saturday.

Pump failures also caused basements to flood, particularly in Detroit, Dearborn and the Grosse Pointe communities.

On Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer made a trip to Detroit to view the damage, and stated that climate change and an aging infrastructure were to blame for the massive flooding.

"This is a confluence of decades of underinvestment, and climate change," Whitmer told reporters. "And I think it's important that as we move forward we continue to work on both fronts."
