DETROIT (WWJ) A 4-year-old and two teens died in a triple shooting at a park on Detroit's east side.

Detroit Police said the shooting happened at a park near Denby High School, on Kelly near Morang, on Friday, June 27, around 6:30 p.m.

"During the summer months, we do see an uptick in violence," Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said during a press conference.

The 4-year-old was shot in the back and died, according to Bettison.

Authorities said an 18-year-old man was also fatally wounded at the scene. The third victim, a 17-year-old boy, was treated and released from a local hospital.

Bettison told WWJ officers arrested two "persons of interest" based on descriptions given by witnesses and the initial 911 caller.

"We do believe we possibly have the shooters (in custody)," Bettison said.

Homicide detectives are reviewing home security footage from neighbors, canvassing the neighborhood, and interviewing witnesses as they investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. According to Bettison, officers responded to the scene within two minutes.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up.

"We will relentlessly work this case," Bettison said. "Anytime you have a four-year-old, a young person of that age, who is fatally wounded... this one really gets to me."

Editor's note: On June 28, WWJ erroneously reported that the 17-year-old victim in this case died in the hospital. That report was based on incorrect information that was provided by the DPD.
