(WWJ) -- Are you ready to meet your new best friend?
The BISSELL Pet Foundation, based in Grand Rapids, is once again sponsoring the annual “Empty the Shelters” event, happening now through the end of July.
A total of 41 shelters across the state of Michigan are participating in the initiative, which makes adoption more affordable by lowering fees to $50 or less.
BISSELL is also reminding those looking to adopt or foster a pet that Michigan animals shelters are currently at capacity, meaning there’s no better time to give a furry friend a second chance at family.
"Right now, our shelters in Michigan and throughout the country are full," the BISSELL Foundation’s Brittany Schlacter told WWJ’s Beth Fisher. "Which means there are so many healthy, adoptable pets ready to go home with you."
"You can make a difference by visiting your shelter and considering adoption," Schlacter added, "but if that’s not right at this time, you can always consider fostering or even volunteering to make a difference."
Schlacter said the foundation has a goal to adopt out 1,200 pets each day.
In the Southeast Michigan region, participating shelters include:
-Detroit Dog Rescue, Detroit
-Do Only Good Animal Rescue, Rochester
-Friends For Animals of Metro Detroit, Dearborn
-Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control, Detroit
-Humane Society of Huron Valley, Ann Arbor
-Humane Society of Monroe County, Monroe
-Livingston County Animal Control and Shelter, Howell
-Macomb County Animal Control, Clinton Township
-Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society, Detroit
-Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center, Pontiac
-St. Clair County Animal Control, Port Huron
