FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) -- Dozens of cats were discovered living with a woman in a hotel room in Farmington Hills.
Oakland County Animal Control said firefighters found 53 cats in a room at Motel 6 on Grand River near Haggerty earlier this week.
They were all owned by a 51-year-old Texas woman, authorities said.
"She knew the names of each one of the 53 cats. She loved them. They were her cats, here babies, and she was taking care of them," said Oakland County Animal Control spokesperson Bob Gatt.
She was issued a citation.
Gatt stressed that this is not a case of animal abuse or neglect, and the woman is not expected to face charges.
"Our vet staff examined each cat, found them to be in very, very good shape. On Monday of this week, the woman, the Texas woman, came to the station and signed them over to us," Gatt said. "She understood that she could not possibly care for 53 cats."
The woman kept three of her cats.
The other 50 are in the process of being spayed and neutered and will be put up for adoption.
