The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team said they were contacted by the Lake Orion Village Police Department about a missing boater in the 600 block of Victoria Island about 5:40 p.m. on June 16.

According to deputies, the family of Tonino Zaccagnini, 55, of Lake Orion made the missing persons report after seeing some of his personal items floating in the water near a boat house and an empty boat adrift on the lake.

Shortly after, a family friend discovered Zaccagnini in six feet of water roughly 15 feet from shore.

"The rescue team recovered Zaccagnini from the water and began performing CPR," the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement. "He was transferred to a nearby boat launch where paramedics from the Orion Township Fire Department took over life-saving efforts."

Despite immediate emergency care, the 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, the sheriff's office said the circumstance surrounding Zaccagnini's death remains under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
