WEST BRANCH (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police investigators have seized more than 5,400 marijuana plants from an alleged illegal grow operation in Northern Michigan.
Detectives with the Marijuana and Tobacco Investigation Section (MTIS) worked with the Ogemaw County Prosecutor's office to execute search warrants near West Branch, MSP said in a release on Thursday.
Along with the hundreds of plants, troopers also took more than pounds of processed marijuana from the site.
In a statement, MSP said the suspects "were growing and processing marijuana in direct violation of Michigan's Medical Marihuana Act of 2008, the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act of 2016 and the Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act of 2018."
Charges are pending against the suspects, whose names were not immediately released.
While it's now legal in Michigan to grow and possess marijuana in certain amounts, it's still against the law to possess large numbers of marijuana plants, or sell marijuana without a license.
MSP said MTIS will continue to conduct investigations and actively pursue criminal charges throughout Michigan against businesses and people who cultivate, manufacture and distribute black market marijuana and marijuana infused products.
