LAMBERTVILLE (WWJ) -- An elderly woman is dead after being assaulted by her 81-year-old husband.
Monroe County Sheriff's officers responded to domestic violence reports in Lambertville, on the Michigan-Ohio border, around 11:27 a.m. Friday.
When deputies arrived on the scene in the 2200 block of Fountain Circle in Bedford Township, they met with the 911 caller outside of the location where it was determined a physical assault had occurred.
Information from a witness indicated that an additional assault was possibly in progress, occurring inside the residence.
Deputy Brian Biegajski entered the home to perform a welfare check, where he witnessed the elderly man actively assaulting his 78-year-old wife. Biegajski was able to interrupt the assault and detain the suspect without incident.
Medics arrived on scene and provided care to the woman, who had significant injuries. The victim was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where she later died.
The elderly man was taken to a local hospital, where he is being treated and evaluated.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau is trying to determine what may have led to the assault.
Bedford Township Fire and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.
