DETROIT (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after an 8-year-old was shot and killed on Detroit’s west side late Saturday night.

Detroit police officials tell WWJ the child was shot around 10:30 p.m. inside a home on Ward Avenue, near Fenkell and Meyers.

The child was privately taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to police. No further information about the child has been released.

While the investigation is in its early stages and homicide detectives are looking into it, a police spokesperson tells WWJ it appears the child may have gotten ahold of an unsecured gun inside the home.

It was not clear if any other children or adults were inside the home at the time.

No other information has been released.
