CARP LAKE TWP (WWJ) -- An 8-year-old Wisconsin boy who went missing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been found after an intensive and desperate search that began over the weekend.

Michigan State Police say that Nante Niemi was camping with his family in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park when he disappeared at around 1 p.m. on May 6. He was last seen while walking and gathering firewood.

More than 150 search and rescue personnel from MSP and local law enforcement agencies -- including nine K-9 officers -- began searching a 40-square-mile area on foot. Organized volunteers, aviation and water rescue teams also conducted patrols.

Officials said the terrain is remote and hilly with lots of standing water due to the recent snow melts and flooding, which complicated search efforts.

In an update late Monday afternoon, MSP's Eighth District said Nante was located safe and is back with his family.

"A volunteer searching found him under/near a log, where'd he been the entire time, about two miles from the campsite," MSP said, adding: "He appears to be in good health!"
